Lions Make a Splash in the First Round of the 2024 NFL Draft
The Detroit Lions managed to secure the top cornerback of this year’s draft class, Terrion Arnold, through a Day 1 trade in the 2024 NFL Draft. Arnold’s acquisition epitomizes a strategic fit for the Lions, both from a mental toughness and schematic compatibility standpoint. However, they did let go of a valuable third-round pick (No. 73) to land Arnold.
Having only one pick on Day 2 (No. 61), followed by a long hiatus until pick No. 164 in the fifth round, the trade puts the Lions in a challenging position in terms of draft capital for Day 2.
Scenario 1: Stick With Current Picks
Remaining true to their draft position, the Lions could focus on harnessing the best value at their current slots. This would mean adding rookie talent like Christian Haynes, who offers immediate potential and long-term promise. Adding depth at other positions on Day 3 is also an option, although this does pose the risk of missing out on a possibly needed wide receiver.
Scenario 2: Trade Back for More Picks
Considering trading back from pick No. 61 to acquire more picks can be tempting. In one proposed mock trade, the Lions would secure additional mid-round selections by trading with the Jets, effectively narrowing the gap between their picks thanks to acquiring picks No. 72 and 111, plus a future fourth-rounder. This maneuver allows the Lions to snag a promising wide receiver and adds potential starting talent in guard on Day 2, although it comes at the cost of a minor drop in individual player value.
Scenario 3: Trading Up for High Impact
The last scenario involves doubling down and moving up the draft order. In a hypothetical draft-day trade, the Lions could acquire pick No. 53 from the Eagles by giving up pick No. 61 and a 2025 fourth-rounder. This aggressive strategy is in line with Holmes’ bold approach and could net the Lions a significant upgrade at wide receiver, though it sacrifices depth and draft capital for the ensuing year.
