The Detroit Lions will be without quarterback Hendon Hooker for at least the first two days of practice this week following a concussion he sustained during Thursday’s preseason opener against the New York Giants. Head coach Dan Campbell announced on Sunday that Hooker would be sidelined for practices on both Sunday and Monday.
“It’s looking less like we will have him in practice this week until Friday, getting ready for the [preseason game against the] Chiefs, and that’s not a guarantee,” Campbell said via The Detroit News. “Until he obviously clears the concussion protocol, then we’re on hold with him.”
During his limited time on the field, Hooker completed five of nine passes for 36 yards and added four carries for 34 yards, showing promise despite enduring several hard hits. Campbell noted, “There were some encouraging things in there… It was promising.”
Given Hooker’s current status, Campbell hinted that the team might consider bringing in another quarterback. “Brad and I talked about it this morning. That could come down to the wire, today or tomorrow. There is a chance [we’ll add one],” he stated.
Roster Adjustments and Injury Updates
In addition to Hendon Hooker’s absence, the Lions received unfortunate news regarding edge rusher Nate Lynn, who will miss the entire season due to a shoulder injury. The team has placed Lynn on the reserve/injured list. To adjust the roster, the Lions have also waived injured offensive lineman Connor Galvin and signed linebacker Abraham Beauplan and offensive tackle Jamarco Jones.
On a more positive note, offensive lineman Christian Mahogany, who has been dealing with an undisclosed illness throughout training camp, is making progress. Although Campbell mentioned Mahogany likely won’t practice this week, he is working on the acclimation process and will participate in team meetings.
As the Lions continue to assess their roster and manage injuries, they are preparing for their upcoming preseason matchups with a focus on staying competitive and healthy.
