The Detroit Lions secured a narrow 24-23 victory against the Kansas City Chiefs in a hard-fought preseason matchup at Arrowhead Stadium. With key contributions from various players, the Lions improved their preseason record to 1-1. Here are three studs and two duds from Saturday’s game.

DETROIT LIONS STUDS

Hendon Hooker

Hendon Hooker entered the game after a solid outing by Nate Sudfeld, who completed 14-of-27 passes for 196 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Hooker displayed impressive poise in his second NFL appearance, finishing 12-of-15 for 150 yards, including a seven-yard rushing touchdown. He orchestrated a pivotal drive that set up the game-winning field goal as time expired, showcasing his readiness for a potential backup role.

Isaiah Williams

Isaiah Williams continued his strong preseason showing with six receptions for 71 yards and 11 rushing yards on an end-around. His versatility and dynamic playmaking capabilities could make him a valuable asset on the Detroit Lions roster.

Sione Vaki

Sione Vaki thrived with increased opportunities, rushing for 22 yards on six carries and adding 60 receiving yards on four catches. His performance exemplified his potential role in the Lions’ offensive plans as the regular season approaches.

DETROIT LIONS DUDS

Special Teams

Despite Bates having a solid day in the kicking game (aside from the missed extra point), some kick and punt returns likely left Detroit Lions special teams coordinator Dave Fipp less than pleased. One player who particularly hurt his chances of making the team was WR Jalon Calhoun, who fumbled during a kick return. In terms of kick coverage, the Lions allowed returns of 43, 36, and 31 yards, along with a 42-yard punt return, further compounding the issues.

Chelen Garnes

The Lions’ secondary struggled during a crucial fourth-quarter moment when Chelen Garnes failed to make a key tackle, allowing the Chiefs to score on a long pass play. This misstep underscored the need for defensive consistency.

As the Lions continue their preseason journey, standout performances from players like Hooker, Williams, and Vaki provide hopeful signs for a competitive season ahead.
