Detroit Lions rookie cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw made an impression during their team’s joint practices and preseason opener against the New York Giants. Head coach Dan Campbell expressed satisfaction with both players, highlighting their development in training camp.
Arnold participated in the first three series of the Detroit Lions exhibition game, playing 13 snaps before being pulled. Rakestraw saw more action, taking snaps at both outside corner and nickel positions. “It was encouraging from all of those guys,” Campbell said. “Certainly, you already mentioned TA (Terrion Arnold), I thought he had a good week at practice. Got some really, really good reps out there, outside and, you know, he’s a competitive guy, which we already know.”
Campbell noted that both Arnold and Rakestraw exhibit a strong mental approach to the game. “They both have ability, but they’re also wired the right way,” he explained. “And I think that’s the hard thing. We talk about it with that position… you’ve got to understand you’re going to get beat on some stuff. And then how does that affect your psyche?”
Arnold and Rakestraw have been standout performers throughout training camp, earning positive reviews from fans and analysts. Campbell underscored their potential, stating, “The game’s not too big for him, so we like where he’s trending right now.”
In addition to Arnold and Rakestraw, defensive back Amik Robertson was noted as a top performer, receiving a high grade from Pro Football Focus for his solid play. “Amik went in there and did a nice job for us… all those guys you listed are really stepping up,” said Campbell.
Both rookies are showing the capacity to grow and adapt quickly, which is encouraging as the Detroit Lions prepare for the regular season.
