The Detroit Lions have officially signed linebacker Joel Iyiegbuniwe to strengthen their depth at the position amid recent injuries. The signing was confirmed by Aaron Wilson.
Iyiegbuniwe’s NFL Journey
Iyiegbuniwe, a fourth-round draft pick by the Chicago Bears in 2018, most recently played with the Carolina Panthers during the 2022 NFL season. He also spent the spring season with the San Antonio Brahmas of the United Football League (UFL), where he recorded 13 total tackles.
Throughout his NFL career, which spans 65 games, Iyiegbuniwe has compiled 31 tackles, one tackle for loss, and one forced fumble. Additionally, he brings valuable special teams experience, having logged 1,334 snaps in that role. His previous teams include the Bears, Panthers, and Seattle Seahawks.
Detroit Lions Address Linebacker Depth Issues
The Detroit Lions are looking to bolster their linebacking corps following injuries to Malik Jefferson, who exited the preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs, and Malcolm Rodriguez, who has been sidelined since joint practices with the New York Giants. This signing follows earlier additions of linebackers Abraham Beauplan and Ty Summers.
The Detroit Lions are set to wrap up their preseason schedule with a home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday at 1 p.m.
