The Detroit Lions have made several significant roster adjustments as they prepare for their upcoming preseason matchups. Among the most notable changes is the waiving of wide receiver Antoine Green with an injury designation. Green suffered a concussion and neck injury during Thursday’s game and did not return. If Green clears waivers, he is expected to be placed on the Lions’ injured reserve list, effectively ending his season unless an injury settlement is reached.
Antoine Green’s Injury and Its Impact on Detroit Lions
Antoine Green was a strong contender for the Lions’ WR3 position, competing against Donovan Peoples-Jones, Daurice Fountain, and others. His injury and subsequent waiver significantly impact the team’s wide receiver depth, as Green had shown promise during training camp and early preseason action.
The Lions’ decision to waive Green with an injury designation opens the possibility for him to return to the team via injured reserve, but his season could be over if an injury settlement is agreed upon. This move creates more opportunities for other receivers on the roster to step up and claim a spot on the final roster.
Jake Fromm Signed After Hendon Hooker’s Injury
In a corresponding move, the Lions signed quarterback Jake Fromm following the recent concussion suffered by Hendon Hooker in the preseason opener against the New York Giants.
Fromm, a former fifth-round pick by the Buffalo Bills in 2020, has limited NFL experience, with only three appearances for the New York Giants in 2021. He was most recently with the Washington Commanders but was released in May. Fromm’s signing provides the Lions with added depth at the quarterback position as they prepare for their next preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Additional Roster Changes: Ike Boettger Released, Ty Summers Signed
The Lions also made a couple of other roster moves, releasing offensive lineman Ike Boettger and signing linebacker Ty Summers. Boettger had joined the team at the beginning of training camp, and his release could signal that Christian Mahogany is close to returning to practice after being on the non-football illness list.
Ty Summers, a former seventh-round pick by the Green Bay Packers, brings experience to the Lions, particularly on special teams. Summers has made 67 appearances in the NFL and spent most of the offseason with the Jacksonville Jaguars before being released. His addition to the roster adds depth to the Lions’ linebacker corps as they continue to evaluate their roster during the preseason.
