Detroit Lions rookie cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr., along with running back Jahmyr Gibbs, were all forced to exit Monday’s practice early due to injuries. Arnold sustained an upper body injury, Rakestraw is dealing with an ankle issue, and Gibbs suffered a hamstring injury. Unfortunately, none of the players returned to the field after their respective incidents.
Injuries During One-on-One Drills
The injuries to Arnold and Rakestraw occurred during one-on-one drills early in the session. Rakestraw made an attempt to rejoin practice during the 11-on-11 segment but had to leave after just one series. Trainers attended to both cornerbacks for an extended period, but fortunately, they were able to walk off the field without assistance. As far as Gibbs goes, Adam Schefter is reporting that it is his hamstring.
Impact on the Lions’ Depth Chart
These injuries are a significant blow to the Lions, who are already dealing with several issues in their secondary. Arnold, the Lions’ first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, has been a frontrunner for a starting role, receiving first-team reps throughout camp. Rakestraw, selected 61st overall, has primarily worked with the second team but has recently been practicing in the nickel position.
An update on player conditions is expected as head coach Dan Campbell is scheduled to address the media following Saturday’s preseason game. The Lions will be hoping for swift recoveries for Arnold, Rakestraw, and Gibbs as they prepare for the upcoming season.
