Kicker Jake Bates caught the spotlight at Detroit Lions practice on Sunday, nailing a stunning 64-yard field goal. Before joining the Lions in June as a free agent, Bates had already proven his prowess in the United Football League (UFL) with the Michigan Panthers, where he made several long-distance kicks, including another 64-yarder. His latest achievement harkens back to his UFL days and positions him just behind Justin Tucker’s 66-yard NFL record at Ford Field.
Bates Goes BOOM With Long Field Goal
A video shared by the Detroit Lions on Twitter showcases Bates’ impressive kick, which had plenty of leg to clear much further than the 64 yards attempted, offering a glimpse into his potential for the upcoming season.
Lions’ Confidence in Jake Bates
Jake Bates has recently been gaining significant momentum in training camp following a challenging period. His 64-yard field goal is a testament to his capability, complementing his 53-yarder in preseason Week 1 against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell expressed strong confidence in Bates, stating, “It was good to see Jake hit that field goal — 53 yarder with the rain right down the pipes,” Campbell said, per Jeremy Reisman of Pride of Detroit. “We told him after the scrimmage the other day, ‘We’re sticking with you. We’re going to give you a chance to grow here. Let’s see how you respond.’ He was told that, (Dave) Fipp told him, I told him, and so I thought it was encouraging.”
Currently, Bates stands as the lone kicker on the Lions’ roster following Michael Badgley’s season-ending injury. With the team behind him, Bates has a considerable opportunity to secure his position.
Bates will be showcasing his skills next when the Lions play the Kansas City Chiefs in preseason Week 2 on Saturday.
