Lions’ Sione Vaki Shines with ‘Phenomenal’ Singing Voice

Detroit Lions rookie running back Sione Vaki has caught the attention of his teammates and coaches, not just for his on-field performance but for his exceptional singing voice. During the team’s annual rookie show, held in Allen Park, coach Dan Campbell couldn’t contain his admiration for Vaki’s vocal talent.

Referring to Sione Vaki’s performance, Campbell remarked, “I don’t know if [Vaki had] the best performance, but as far as the best voice that I’ve heard, probably, it’s up there.” He added, “The performance was, ‘Eh,’ the voice, it was pretty phenomenal. It really is.”

The rookie show is a team tradition where new players perform a solo song and dance routine in front of the entire team. Although Sione Vaki’s overall performance elicited mixed reactions, his singing ability stood out as exceptional. To further demonstrate his talent, Vaki gave a sampling of his vocals after practice, much to the delight of his teammates.

Campbell also highlighted another rookie, UDFA defensive end Isaac Ukwu, for both his on-field and off-field talents. “Ukwu has got a damn good voice too, all right, and they may be singing a duet today after practice,” Campbell noted. With Ukwu’s strong performances in the preseason, he has positioned himself with a chance to make the 53-man roster.

These rookie shows are designed not just for entertainment but also to build team camaraderie and break the monotony of training camp. The Lions’ tradition of memorable rookie performances was well captured in HBO’s “Hard Knocks” in 2022, where Aidan Hutchinson’s rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” became a standout moment.

Fans may need to wait a bit longer for a potential Vaki-Ukwu duet to go public. However, if Ukwu continues to impress in the Lions’ upcoming preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, this dynamic duo might find their way into the spotlight. Until then, Vaki and Ukwu’s musical talents have been yet another facet of the vibrant team culture that has been fostered in Detroit.

The anticipation surrounding these young players’ abilities, both on and off the field, adds an exciting layer to the Lions’ preseason narrative. As the team gears up for the final stretches of the preseason, all eyes will be on these rookies, hopeful for both their athletic and artistic contributions.
