It is a reunion for Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions 2020 NFL Draft pick
The Los Angeles Rams have signed former Detroit Lions wide receiver Quintez Cephus to their practice squad in response to a string of injuries decimating their receiving corps. Cephus, drafted by the Lions in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, enters the Rams organization at a pivotal moment, as they grapple with the absence of star wide receivers Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua.
Injuries Force Rams to Strengthen Receiver Depth
The Rams have been hit hard by injuries, particularly with Kupp, who is expected to miss significant time with a left ankle sprain. Although he was spared from the injured reserve list, Kupp’s return is uncertain, depending on his recovery progress over the next four weeks. Puka Nacua, another key piece of the Rams’ offense, is on injured reserve following a knee injury. With two major contributors out, the Rams have been forced to bolster their depth by adding Cephus to the mix.
A Second Chance for Quintez Cephus
At 26, Cephus is looking for a fresh start after a rocky journey in the NFL. His promising rookie season with the Lions included 20 receptions for 349 yards and two touchdowns, but injuries derailed his following seasons. In addition to battling injuries in 2021 and 2022, Cephus faced an indefinite suspension for violating the NFL’s gambling policy, which further complicated his career. Brief stints with the Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans didn’t yield long-term results, leading to this new opportunity with the Rams.
Reuniting with Former Lions QB Matthew Stafford
Interestingly, Cephus will be reunited with Matthew Stafford, who was the Lions’ quarterback when Cephus was drafted. This familiarity could prove beneficial as Cephus works to carve out a role with the Rams. In his NFL career, Cephus has recorded 37 receptions for 568 yards and four touchdowns in 22 games. With the Rams seeking offensive playmakers to fill the void left by injuries, Cephus will aim to make the most of this chance to contribute and reestablish himself in the league.
