Why Center Is Driving the Lions’ Line Battle

Dan Campbell made the Lions’ interior line battle easy to read once camp opened: center is driving everything. After Frank Ragnow’s retirement, Campbell called the Detroit Lions offensive line an open competition, and the first rep distribution showed why the middle spot is setting the board for both guard jobs.

Campbell said Detroit had to sort out the line after losing Ragnow and Kevin Zeitler. Early in camp, Tate Ratledge took first-team reps at center, with Graham Glasgow and Christian Mahogany part of the interior picture for the Detroit Lions offensive line.

Center became the first question

Ragnow’s exit forced Detroit to rebuild the interior around a new center plan. Campbell said Ragnow would be sorely missed, and he later pointed to versatility up front as part of the response while adding that the train rolls on.

That idea showed up immediately in the camp layout. Detroit’s training camp preview identified Ratledge, Glasgow and Mahogany as the likely interior trio entering camp, with coaches looking for competition across the group inside. For the Detroit Lions offensive line, that made center the starting point for the entire discussion.

The rep shift changed the guard picture

The first look did not stay in place. After opening camp with Ratledge at center, Detroit moved Glasgow into first-team center reps and shifted Ratledge to right guard, a change that tied the center decision directly to the rest of the interior alignment during camp.

That is the part of this battle that matters most right now. If Glasgow holds the strongest center look, Ratledge’s path runs through guard snaps, and Mahogany stays in the mix for the remaining interior spot rather than getting boxed out by a fixed lineup. It is why the Detroit Lions offensive line competition is really centered on one question first.

The next rep split to watch

Detroit appears to be giving its longest look to Glasgow at center with Ratledge at right guard, while keeping the broader guard competition alive around them. The next question is how often Ratledge still works at center and whether Mahogany keeps enough guard reps to push that alignment before the staff settles on its first interior three on the Detroit Lions offensive line.
